Terms and Conditions after 1/4/2008

NOTE: IF A CREDIT CARD IS NOT PRESENTED UPON PICKUP THE CLIENT WILL BE DENIED TO RENT THE CAMERVAN AND FULL CANCELLATION FEES WILL BE APPLIED.

For security purposes Backpacker, Britz and Maui only accept credit cards to provide a security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and be able to sign for the security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.

Rates/Minimum Hire Periods:
* Rates are per day in NZ$ and include unlimited kilometres & GST (New Zealand Government Tax)
* Minimum rental period is 5 days with the following exceptions: Minimum rental period is 10 days for hires with a collection date between 23 December and 10 January. Minimum rental period is 10 days when a vehicle is being collected from the North Island and is being returned to the South Island if the rental commences between the months of October through to March.

Drivers/Licences
A current and full motor vehicle driver’s licence is required and must be produced upon vehicle collection. Should a foreign licence be in a language other then English it must be accompanied by a current international driving permit issued in the same country as the driver’s licence was issued. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit. Drivers must be 21 years of age or over. A medical certificate stating that the customer is fit to drive the vehicle they have booked for the duration of the hire is required for drivers over the age of 75.

Transfers/Vehicle Pickup
Complimentary transfers from Auckland and Christchurch Domestic and International Airports to rental branch and back to Airport. Shuttle bus runs every 45 minutes. In Queenstown all vehicles dispatched from Airport Depot. Wellington depot is located approximately 40 minutes from airport and 20 minutes from city centre and clients must arrange their own transportation to and from the branch at their own expense.

Location Fees
If picking up or dropping of in Wellington NZ$200 location fee will apply (if pick up/drop off occurs in same city, one fee applies).
If picking up or dropping of in Queenstown a NZ$200 location fee will apply (if pick up/drop off occurs in same city, one fee applies).
In addition to One Way fees if applicable.

One Way Drop Off Fee
A one-way rental fee of NZ$220 is charged for rentals between the North and South Island (and vice versa), where pick up is between 01 October and 31 March.

Insurance
Standard Insurance
The hirer is liable for the first NZ$7,500 (Excess Liability) of any damage caused in each and every accident/break-in etc. The Excess Liability is taken at the beginning of the hire (If paying by Credit Card the amount will be debited). The bond is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, with a clean interior, undamaged and full of fuel the card. Reduction options are covered below.

Excess Reduction 1 - By paying $20 per day (max NZ$1000) you are responsible for up to NZ$2500 (the excess) of the cost of damage to third party property or to the rental vehicle. This includes a single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire or break in or vandalism with the exception of 'exclusions'. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage). The excess applies to each claim, not per rental. In the event of an accident an additional $2500 bond is required for a replacement vehicle. The NZ$2500 bond is payable by credit card (debited). The bond is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, with a clean interior, undamaged and full of fuel the card. * Exclusions apply - see below

Excess Reduction 2 - By paying $38 per day (max. NZ$1,900) you will not have to pay excess at all for any damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire or break in or vandalism with the exception of 'exclusions'. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage). A security deposit of NZ$220 is payable by credit card (imprint taken). Provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, with a clean interior, undamaged and full of fuel the card will not be debited. * Exclusions apply - see below

No Worries Cover
This option made available at the depot at vehicle pick up time.
Hirers who purchase option 2 can also take out the "No Worries Cover" option, for a one off flat fee of NZ$50. This option covers you for overbody and underbody damage. No Worries Cover is included in the Maui Premium Package.

Tyre and Windscreen Damage
Where the hirer has a Nil excess, up to one windscreen and two tyres will be covered for accidental damage. Should these amounts be exceeded the cost to repair or replace the items will not be covered and will be the responsibility of the hirer.

Maui Premium Package
The Maui Premium Package component of NZ$50 per day (maximum NZ$2,500 per rental) is payable in addition to the daily rental rate.
Inclusions are:
Excess Reduction Option 2 (Nil excess), No Worries Cover, Diesel Tax Recovery fee, PGO (Pre-purchase gas option), 1 x Table, and Chairs (chairs per person travelling), 1 x Child or Booster seat (must be pre-booked)

*Exclusions
All insurance cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:
1. Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle – except where No Worries cover has been purchased.
2. Any water related damage including but not limited to: any vehicle submersion; creek or river crossing; driving through flooded areas; beach driving
3. Personal belongings. Maui recommends hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and have insurance for the loss/damage of personal belongings.
4. Any damage caused by willful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle)
5. Any damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
6. The Customer will be liable for any costs associated with the incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio-Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
7. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged or abandoned
8. The cost to replace keys, which have been lost or retrieval of keys, which have been locked in a vehicle.
9. The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Maui does not accept any liability.
10. Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
11. Single vehicle rollover occurs

Cleaning fee
Maui reserves the right to retain a NZ$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned with the interior in a clean condition. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional NZ$220 soiling fee will be retained.

Pre-Purchase Gas Option
Allows the customer to return the vehicle without the need for the gas bottle to be replenised. The PGO is $21 per vehicle.

Bond
Hirers with Standard Insurance must pay a bond of NZ$ 7,500 at the commencement of hire unless one or more of the above options has been taken. Payment must be made prior to the commencement of the hire by credit card. In some circumstances cash may be allowed at the discretion of Maui/Britz. Credit cards will be debited immediately (unless otherwise stated) and refunded at the end of the hire as appropriate.

Credit Cards
The credit card holder will be jointly and severally liable as a customer. Accepted credit cards are Visa Card, MasterCard and American Express. A non-refundable 1.75% administration fee will apply to all Visa and MasterCard transactions. A non-refundable 4.5% administration fee will apply to American Express cards.
Credit card administration fees also apply to debited security bonds and only the hirer’s credit card is acceptable to use for the purpose of the security bond.

General Conditions
The Company reserve the right to make deductions over and above the bond for any of, or multiples of the following:

Missing or damaged equipment. The vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. Speeding or parking fines. There will be no refund for vehicle returns before the due date, or unused rental days.

Hired vehicle operated outside the terms on the rental agreement have no insurance cover and the hirer is liable for the entire cost of damage.

Deposit
A deposit of 25% of the total daily hire cost is payable to secure a booking. This is calculated on 25% of the daily hire tarrif times the number of days of the hire. All remaining hire cost's payable at Depot.
